Ref: BNC/MFR/0423NS Salary Range: £37,000 – £45,000 commensurate with experience Manufacturing Lead, Electrochemical Sensors AquAffirm has one full-time Engineer/Scientist role as Manufacturing Lead, Electrochemical Sensors available. Acting as part of the AquAffirm product development team the post-holder will join a highly motivated group working to develop an innovative and award-winning enzyme biosensor for measuring arsenic contamination levels in drinking water. The successful applicant will have a strong background in bio-/chemical-sensors with experience in manufacturing electrochemical sensors. Industrial research and development experience in establishing manufacturing processes would be beneficial. Additionally, the successful candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills and will have an ability to work both independently and as part of a team. The role requires use of the candidate’s own initiative to ensure that all projects are delivered on time, within the scope and in required quality. Confidence in working in a busy, business-focussed environment with highly-skilled and motivated individuals, coupled with the ability to handle pressure on occasions is essential. The appointment will start as soon as possible and is subject to receipt of satisfactory references. Duties and Responsibilities Facility-based position will lead on establishing scalable manufacturing/fabrication process for electrochemical biosensors; Ensure developed process is robust and reproducible; Oversee and undertake experimental work as planned with the project manager and Chief Scientist; Review sensor data collection and data analysis relevant to the project; Ensure the validity and reliability of data at all times; Maintaining accurate and complete records of all findings; Compile and present scientific results to board of directors and investors; Facilitate planning and execution of national and international field trials and attend project progress meetings; Facilitate in the design of SOP’s, protocols and quality control documents; Facilitate in the discussions with external vendors and subcontractors; Facilitate in the development of electronic instrumentation to interface sensors; Oversee use of existing electronic and optical spectroscopy instrumentation and custom software for sensor characterisation and measurement; Prepare progress reports on sensor development and manufacturing as required; Work with Chief Scientist and project manager to ensure undertaken laboratory work is in accordance with the company’s health and safety policy; Review of relevant literature where required; Report to project manager; Carry out any other duties within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by AquAffirm. Qualifications PhD in Electrochemistry or biosensors would be beneficial; industrial experience in sensor manufacturing is essential. Knowledge / Experience Successful candidate will be a laboratory-based scientist with experience in establishing sensor manufacturing processes with demonstrated competency of relevant laboratory skills Ideally applicants will have experience in electrochemical sensors Ideally applicants will have experience in sensor design and characterisation as well as fabrication Experience in enzyme biosensors will be beneficial but not essential Knowledge of use of sensor electronic instrumentation (e.g. potentiostat, spectrum analyser) Knowledge of data processing and modelling software e.g. Matlab, Python is beneficial Ability to apply knowledge and experience, described above, to generate relevant experimental data Skills and Abilities ability to assess comprehensive but succinct review of potential manufacturing processes ability to apply knowledge and experience, described above, to generate and analyse relevant experimental data ability to develop and apply new concepts or theories, drawing on literature and experimental information creative approach to problem-solving excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills excellent written communication skills, especially to write clearly and succinctly for publication ability to organise work on own initiative and prioritise own work in response to deadlines Personal Attributes willingness to work as part of a team and to be open-minded and cooperative flexible attitude towards work as necessitated by the demands of the project highly self-motivated disciplined with regard to confidentiality and security at all times willingness to undertake any necessary training for the role willingness to travel both within the United Kingdom and abroad to conduct research, field-trials and meet with project collaborators/sponsors Salary & Benefits The salary will be commensurate with experience. We also offer a stakeholder pension scheme and 22 days paid annual leave. Normal place of work will be at Bio Nano Consulting’s Laboratories at Rothamsted Open Innovation Hub, Harpenden, Hertfordshire, AL5 2JQ.
